Overwhelming Hunger Games Popularity
According to the New York Times, tickets for Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games,” which opens tonight nationwide, are selling at the blistering pace of 10 per second.
In her Times piece, Brooke Barnes notes that some theaters have added 3am screenings in order to accommodate larger-than-average audiences, but doesn’t speculate on the reasons for the film’s popularity.
Although Matt Fiorento disputes speculation that “Hunger Games” will top $100 million over at Advertising Age, here at Adinsight Daily, we’re going to go out on a limb and say that however much “Hunger Games” pulls in this weekend, it’s refreshing to see a major studio take a stab at a film with a female lead, and that we hope its success will spur further moves towards diversification at American cinemas.
